as well as many other kinds of ministries.
I want to share my faith, but I am afraid because I don’t know what to say.
You will learn what to say to in order to begin the conversation, as well as the gospel concepts you need to share.
I want to share the gospel with my friends, but where do I start?
The Good Soil E&D scale and Onion-Peeling Model will help you with this.
I want to witness to people that I work with, but what if they ask a question I can’t answer?
The seminar will address this and other common concerns that many of us face.
I want to be a witness for Jesus, but I’m afraid my friends will think I’m imposing my beliefs on them – how do I avoid that?
Good Soil training will help you share the gospel in a non-imposing manner, showing respect for the recipient’s beliefs but in an uncompromising way.
My neighbors are Muslims and Buddhists and Hindus and atheists, how can I tell them about Jesus?
Good Soil training is unique in that it is designed to be worldview-relevant, which means we train you to share God’s story of hope in a world of competing faiths and cultures.
One of my friends has never gone to church but now she is asking me to teach her about God and the Bible – what would be a good Bible study resource to use in doing that?
You will learn to use The Story of Hope, which was designed as an evangelistic Bible study that begins with the assumption that the student has no prior knowledge of who God is and what the Bible is all about.
I have a friend who just became a Christian and wants me to help him in getting started as a Christ-follower, what discipleship study should I use?
You will learn to use The Way to Joy, a foundational Bible study that covers ten essential topics for every new believer who is sincere about becoming a committed Christ-follower.
Good Soil Evangelism & Discipleship Seminar Workbook
Available to those that have received Good Soil Trainer Certification. Workbook used in training Worldview-Relevant Evangelism & Discipleship.
The Good Soil Basic Seminar consists of two full days of training. The seminar is based on three evangelism concepts found in Jesus’ parable of the sower/soils:
The first day of the seminar focuses on how to present the gospel in a way that increases the possibilities that these three results are achieved. In the second day of the seminar, we put “tools” (evangelism and discipleship resources) in your hands and give you “hands on” experience learning how to use them—The Story of Hope, The Way to Joy, the Chronological Bridge to Life, and other Good Soil resources. You will learn three very different methods of presenting the gospel—narrative, propositional, and experiential.
Offered in May and October at ABWE – Association of Baptists for World Evangelism – near Harrisburg, PA
And, there’s an optional third day of training – Good Soil Trainer Certification Workshop – to equip and certify you to train others, using the Good Soil Basic Seminar workbook and resources.
This was great training! Finally, all the evangelism pieces fit together for me.
—Gabrielle in the USA
“I just completed the Good Soil Basic Seminar and Trainer Certification Workshop. It is awesome! I cannot wait to begin implementing the concepts as soon as possible. This approach has got to be the absolute best way to present the gospel, giving unbelievers ALL of the information they need in order to make a sincere faith response, resulting in a relationship with Jesus that should last a life time.”
—Keith, in the USA
The training I received in the Good Soil seminar has changed much of how I understand God works in the hearts of people. Since I attended the seminar, God has helped me to bring folks to Christ and help Christians get back on track. Much thanks and praise to our heavenly Father!
—Larry in Arkansas
Many of your "how do I share my faith?" kinds of questions will be answered in this book.
It’s an evangelism and discipleship training seminar in a book—a narrative book. The essence of Good Soil’s distinctives are embedded in an interesting story of two discouraged missionaries and their national colleagues, who discover some principles from the New Testament that revolutionize the way they share the gospel and make disciples.
It’s a great way to get started finding answers to your questions about how to tell unsaved friends and relatives about Jesus, and the eternal hope He can give them.

We are somewhere in the Pacific… maybe halfway to Hawaii. We’re taking a slow (relatively) boat to Hawaii. We’re trying to use this time to rest and recharge. However, the Lord may have other ideas. Yesterday, we attended a Bible study of approximately 30 believers… which somehow I was chosen to lead. Today I will be teaching the Chronological Bridge to Life.
Rhonda shared The Story of Hope with a young lady on the flight to Los Angeles. She is a contestant in American Idol and was genuinely touched. She is definitely following up with her. Stay tuned.

The Roots of Faith App
One hundred beautifully visualized Bible events (50 Old Testament and 50 New Testament) that summarize the Bible's Big Story of redemption, from Genesis through Revelation.
All I can say after opening the package containing The Roots of Faith workbooks and browsing through the pages is "WOW!" This is a lot more than a personal Bible study plan. It's a lot more than I got in Bible college and they gave me a degree for it. Your work has legs for a number of applications. The work you put into this is almost staggering. I especially like the way you have separated it from the devotional approach. I'll stop here before I become suspect with all this flattery. Thanks for the hard work.
—Dave, former Bible college New Testament and Greek professor
I wanted to shoot you a quick email and let you know how fulfilling The Roots of Faith — Old Testament course was for me. I have gained a new appreciation for the unity of scripture and the story that God has woven throughout the Bible. I want to thank you for the work that you have done to bring this course to me. I am looking forward to teaching through the course with my church in the coming year.

Good Soil Training and Resource Catalog
This downloadable PDF catalog is a quick reference to the many resources offered here at Good Soil Evangelism & Discipleship.
I wanted to thank you for bringing the Good Soil seminar to our city. After an afternoon of reflection, I realized some specific areas in my Christian life needed attention. Spiritual warfare is a very difficult experience on a Christian and I did not notice how it had changed my heart. Evangelism and discipleship are two areas that require a loving heart and I came to the understanding I was missing, or needing to repair, this major requirement. Studying through the notes of the program is helping me to develop a different attitude because I'm now in a new arena/environment related to the work of God. Again, thanks for developing the chance to experience something like Good Soil.
—Brad in Tennessee
I just wanted to let you know that I use The Story of Hope as discipleship material. I grew up in the church learning the Bible stories, but not really knowing how they fit together. It wasn't until I got to Bible College and took Bible Survey that the stories began to make sense. I've found since college that there are many more people out there like me. Though TSOH is really a brief skim of Bible Survey, it really is helpful for believers who have grown up in the church to understand the full story from more of a "bird's eye" perspective. I use the material to sort of make my students thirsty for further Bible Survey study of their own. For new believers, I don't skip this material and move right into The Way to Joy. I start with TSOH and then go into TWTJ afterward. All that to say, I am so thankful for the material. Bible Survey is what I love teaching and TSOH is a really good place to start.
—Stephanie, pre-field missionary
Last winter I visited my best friend Tim up in Maryland and taught him the seminar one-on-one. He is involved in inner-city ministry in one of the worst neighborhoods in D.C. I just talked to him earlier. He is teaching a class in the neighborhood using The Story of Hope and is a few weeks into it. He said people are "eating it up." He also mentioned that it has revolutionized his personal evangelism by using TSOH.
—Phil, now a missionary in Israel
In this past week Glen, Russell, and Jim have all had their names written in the Lamb's Book of Life. As I write to you, tears are streaming down my face. God has so blessed my ministry and yours as each of these men learned the redemptive story thru The Story of Hope. All have begun their journey toward sanctification in The Way to Joy.
—Eric in western New York
I have found the Good Soil materials: The Story of Hope and The Way to Joy to be excellent for one on one Bible studies. Thank you for presenting God's redemptive plan in a clear and thoughtful way. May God use your materials as a tool to bring many to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, our Lord!
—Anneliese, in New York
SOOOOO happy to find this beautiful sharing the Gospel guide! In the TWO languages I need. Blessings!!!
—John, Hampton, VA
In January, David gave a copy of The Story of Hope to a 21-year-old army boy. He took it and read it several times. When the assistant pastor spoke to him, he readily received Christ and will soon be discipled by one of our young men. Last month, I passed a copy of The Story of Hope to a young man who is dating one of our young ladies. He read The Story of Hope several times and prayed to receive Christ. I prayed with him today regarding assurance of salvation.
—Charissa, in Singapore
I just wanted to share with you a story we heard tonight about The Story of Hope. Once a month, we get together with a core group of individuals from our home church that encourages and prays for us as we prepare to go to the field. One of the couples that meets with us participates in a Bible Study/English class at a Chinese church in our town every Friday. Last summer they were looking for material to use, so I showed them The Story of Hope. They were very excited and have been using it in the class. There is another couple from our church that works with them in the class. The man is remarried and has a daughter that he and his former wife adopted. The daughter is about 7 years old and comes to stay with them during the summer and holidays. During Christmas vacation the daughter was with them and happened to find a copy of The Story of Hope in the back seat of their car. Apparently, she read through it and loved all the stories and started asking a lot of questions. As a result, she placed her faith and trust in Christ.
—David & Christine, pre-field missionaries to Southeast Asia
The Bible study my neighbor and I are leading together has been wonderful! We have 7 women coming, with a variety of backgrounds ranging from young believer to Catholic and even completely unchurched. The Story of Hope has been fabulous and has brought out many questions from the women that we discuss and look at biblically. Thank you for this resource. I'm ordering more books because several women have mentioned wanting to invite others to join. This study is straightforward and focused, with very good questions for reflection and discussion. God bless you!”

Emails from an elementary school teacher to her friend, Jenn, who led her to Jesus through The Story of Hope:
I just wanted to say thank you so much for coming to speak with me today! You have such a kind, generous heart to help me find that special relationship with God. I am finally ready to take everything in and truly understand it. If it wasn't for you, I would still be searching. I look forward to meeting with you again!
Hey Jenn!! I just finished The Story of Hope. I couldn't put it down today, what a remarkable story!! I am excited to read the next book :-). The Bible has so many wonderful verses inside of it that gives me hope! I would love to meet with you and talk about it! Thanks again for showing me the way to a personal relationship with God, I can never repay you for that. I was also thinking about starting a blog about what I have read. That way, if we are both too busy over the summer months, we could chat through a blog. Let me know your thoughts on that. Hope to see you soon!
—Elementary School Teacher
My friend pastors a church, and I had asked about a wonderful resource to help an unsaved friend who doesn't believe the Messiah has come and still embraces the practices observed in the Old Testament, as well as the celebrations. This is what was recommended to me. I'm excited and thankful for the suggestion.
—Amanda, Brooklyn Park, MN
I am looking to go through The Story of Hope with some of my neighbors. Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend the Good Soil seminar at ABWE! I really appreciated the resources given out as I believe they will be great tools to use in the future!
—David, Owatonna, MN
What a great resource - a great starting point for conversation with ANY person seeking.
—Patrick, PEW35 Ministry, Owatonna, MN
My good friend Leah led me through this study several years ago and now I have an opportunity to do it with another friend. I'm so thankful to have found my original book so I could order a copy to use with my friend and with kids. Thank you!
—Vanessa, Ofallon, MO
My aunt encouraged me to use The Story of Hope with a friend, although the friend is claiming she is a believer (I didn't know for sure when we started, but I think it might just be a head knowledge). She agreed to keep meeting with me. My cousin's wife realized during The Way to Joy that she had a head knowledge and not a heart knowledge. I am hoping the Holy Spirit shows my friend this as we continue to study.
—Kara, Clarks Summit, PA
My pastor in Cleveland Heights, OH, suggested The Story of Hope for a Bible study which I did with two neighbor ladies this winter. We want to continue with The Way to Joy
—Carolyn, Macedonia, OH
I have used The Story of Hope in our Sunday School class. Now I want to go through it and The Way to Joy with a brand-new believer!
—Susan, Newport News, VA
I had a chance to talk to Jay (friend of a recently deceased relative) about eternity. We were able to lead him through a short presentation of The Story of Hope’s chronological salvation message, and with joy, see him trust Christ while praying through the concepts of God, Man, Sin, Death, Christ, Cross, Faith and Life. He desires to do the follow-up Bible study called The Way to Joy also. This is one way in which God has answered your prayers for our peace and purpose in this hard time.
—Missionary from Brazil in the USA after the tragic death of a relative
Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to participate in The Roots of Faith. It was all that I hoped for - and so much more. My goal was to "be able to connect the dots" of the story of the Bible. I pictured the Bible stories and events as a bowl of pearls, with the string being redemption. But I didn't know how to put it all together to make a beautiful necklace. Now I do! Thank you also for so much more. Whether I am reading the Bible at home, hearing a sermon, studying in Sunday School or Bible studies - I've grown to see and understand the Bible on many more levels - from the level of being better able to share with an inquiring person who knows very little, to the levels of more understanding of God's plan.
I really appreciate the interactive learning style and the "baton-teaching" method of having one of several very knowledgeable teachers introduce a lesson, then pass the baton to the next one to lead us further into the scripture, and then the baton passed to the next one for other aspects of the lesson. I kept seeing things in scripture that I "never saw before." Chronology, geography, Biblical history - were woven through the lessons, and it was a lot of fun to work in mini-groups to list answers on flip charts, make maps with string on the floor, and experience lots of creative ways to learn in a non-threatening situation. I appreciated being able to comfortably ask questions during the sessions or on breaks. Time flew in spite of there being a lot of material to cover!
The course emphasis on God, the Promise Keeper, has been so enriching, as the story kept unfolding ways that God fulfilled His promises. The Roots of Faith has not only quenched my thirst for understanding, but also made me more thirsty to know more.
Thanks so much to you, to the authors of the material, and to all the instructors and to David Brooks for his new commentary. It reads just like he sounds when he's teaching. What a gift! I hope many others take the course, whether or not they are currently teachers of the Bible. Thank you for the blessings of this course, and for the opportunity to be there - even though I'm neither an actual missionary or pastor.
—Chris, church member in the USA
The Good Soil E&D exposition of the parable of the four soils has changed the way I look at lost people. The Story of Hope and the Chronological Bridge to Life help me get folks to a receptive place in their lives for the best growth. I serve people in various bondages so the other three soils have helped me see where people are at. Most of The Story of Hope I have committed to memory. It has become a tool for me to evangelize, water and cultivate lives.
—Larry in Arkansas
The LORD has used your Gaining Ground with Good Soil book to quake my soul this morning‼️ I wanted to splash you with the joy and thanksgiving in HIS turning my fallow ground through your tenacity and obedience.
—Dean and Tami, Winter Haven, FL
A pastor friend introduced us to Good Soil and I am thankful and blessed for having experienced the way you have made it easier for any believer to tell the story of God and share the gospel. -Camila
This great resource was found by my husband while attending a conference. He recommended it to me to help me talk about God's Word with people in a "relationship evangelism" context. I always want to share God's Word, but am afraid I won't remember the right verses or won't explain things well enough so that people can understand all the key things they need to know. I invited an acquaintance/friend on my commuter train in the mornings to do a Bible study with me that promised to give her the overview of the contents of the Bible in 40 ten-minute lessons. She said she was interested, so we began working through The Story of Hope workbook. We would engage in our daily chit chat and cover a lesson or two in 15-25 minutes every morning. We would read the passages listed in each lesson together on our phones/Kindle and discuss the straightforward discussion questions. For most of the passages we read, it was the FIRST TIME SHE HAD HEARD OR READ THE WORD OF GOD. It was so exciting to see God revealing Himself and His plan of salvation to her, and to see Him opening her heart and mind to believe His Word. When we finished the study, she had gained an understanding of the big story of the Bible from creation to revelation, the problem of sin, the purpose of Jesus dying on the cross, and the need to trust only in what Jesus did on the cross to pay for sin and gain eternal life. She believed His Word and said it explained many things she had run across in life but never understood, like the meaning of Christmas songs. I am looking forward to more opportunities to create disciples by inviting others to study the Bible with me with the help of this workbook. Good job and thanks!!!

12 Essentials for a TRULY Evangelistic Church
If you are a parent, you know how exciting is to see your baby take his or her first steps. Inevitably there are going to be some stumbles along the way, but first steps indicate that your child is maturing properly. One crucial step in learning to walk is the “hand holding” stage, in which parents provide physical support and balance, protection from falls, and the encouragement that helps the child gain the skills and confidence needed to walk alone. If your church doesn’t provide “first steps” hand-holding with baby Christians, it’s likely that many or most of them will stumble right out the back door.Read more
It began as just the next lesson in The Story of Hope. For several weeks, Pastor Dennis Nkosi of Crossroads Community of Christ Church in Durban, South Africa, had been teaching a group of sixteen students, including two pastors. That Monday night, the group studied the event of the bronze serpent in the wilderness. The Israelites had rebelled in unbelief against God, and He punished them in judgment with deadly serpent bites. When the people confessed their sin and Moses prayed for deliverance, God provided a way to be saved from death. They needed to look and respond to God in faith in order to be restored. During the lesson, there was a palpable tension in the room. The students left the room that night clearly troubled...Read more
